IMPORTANT – For Autodesk Inventor 2016 thru 2020 Users

Update (9/11/19) – We’re now including the 2020 version in this scope because some users are reporting content center crashes under the Windows 10 1903 version.   Update Inventor 2020 to the 2020.1 release and also ensure you have all the latest crucial Windows updates.

In addition, we are providing the official link to the related Autodesk Knowledge Network article, here – which includes a workaround that may be helpful for those using the Inventor 2016 version.

Update (9/3/19) – When using Inventor Frame Generator of the impacted versions (2016-2019) on the 1903 version of Windows 10, users will see a message like this:

In addition, there have been additional questions regarding Inventor 2019 and what happens if you don’t have access to the update that is listed in this article.

For Inventor 2019, you need to install the Inventor 2019.4 update to address the issue.

If you’re not on an active maintenance plan or subscription, you would not be entitled to the Inventor 2017.4/2017.4.10, Inventor 2018.3/2018.3.6 and Inventor 2019.4 update as listed in this article.  Your solution to this issue is to roll back the Windows 10 2903 update (if you’re permitted to) or upgrade to Inventor 2020.

Update (8/6/19) – For Inventor 2017 and 2018, you must first have Inventor 2017.4 or Inventor 2018.3 installed, prior to installing the updates mentioned below.

Update (7/16/19) – This morning Autodesk released formal fixes for these issues.  To address the issue, check your Autodesk Account/Product Updates.  Inventor 2017.4.10, and Inventor 2018.3.6.

Update (5/30/19) – After doing some more investigation on this matter we wanted to update where things stand.

Further testing has indicated that this may also be impacting those who manage content center through Vault, however, at this time, further testing is needed to determine the range (versions) of impact.

For Inventor 2019, please ensure that you have the latest Inventor release installed.  Some Inventor 2019 users may be faced with this issue, especially if they’re still using the RTM (original) release version.

For Inventor 2018, it appears that earlier versions may not be impacted, but the newer mid-year releases of Inventor 2018 could be faced with the same issue.

As we already recommended in our original post, no matter if you’re impacted or not, we still feel strongly that users should hold off on upgrading Windows 10 to the 1903 version.

For those who are using Autodesk Inventor versions 2016 thru 2019 on a Windows 10 machine – please read:

We are recommending you hold off on upgrading Windows 10 to Version 1903 that was released by Microsoft on May 21, 2019.  This Windows 10 version is causing Inventor 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 to stop working/exiting with the following message:

This happens when placing content center components (from desktop content center) into your assembly.  Through Windows Event viewer, the issue appears to be related to the “UCRTBASE.DLL” file and has been reported to Autodesk.

If you have already upgraded to Windows 10 version 1903, we are recommending for you to roll back to a previous Windows 10 version.

Not sure what version of Windows 10 you’re currently using?

Select  the Windows “Start” button and type “WINVER” and you will see a dialog box similar to this:

At the time this article was released (5/28/19 @ 1:30PM), the crash is only being reported when using Inventor Desktop Content Center for Inventor 2016 thru 2019 versions.  Further testing for the 2020 release and Autodesk Vault managed content center is underway.

  • Good news for the updates ! We are still using Inventor 2016, will there be an update for it ?

    • We are not currently aware of any plans for Autodesk to release a formal update for the 2016 version. While it is possible, we have no information at this point.

  • So what is the fix if windows cant be rolled back?

    • Hi there. The fix would be to ensure that your Autodesk software is up-to-date with all the latest patches and updates. You can do this directly from your Autodesk Account.
