The Next Generation of BIM 360, Part 7: The New BIM 360 Design Hypermodel Navigation Update

In Part 6, we discussed BIM 360 Desktop Connect and how it can provide workflows for cross-platform collaboration. In this addition, we’ll be discussing another new update. Recently, Autodesk released Hypermodel Navigation within their Design Collaboration module of BIM 360 Design. This new feature allows Teams to easily navigate back and forth between 2D views and 3D models.
The first and most obvious benefit of this new feature is the “Place Me” tool on the Design Collaboration toolbar. Similar to the Google Maps “Street View” feature, “Place Me” enables a Team member to place a location marker onto a 2D view or sheet.
Once placed, the Team member can rotate the direction the marker looks in the view.
Prior to entering the model view, Design Collaboration displays a pane of first-person navigation instructions.
Immediately, the Team member is transported to the same location within the Project Model. It is worth noting:
- Revit models published prior to August 29 do not provide this capability
- Models published after August 29 have some limitations:
- 2D Model views without the Crop View parameter enabled will not work with “Place Me”
- 2D Model views that have a break or split into will not work with “Place Me”
- 2D Sheet views with Callout or Area Plan views will not work at this time
Once the Team member has finished navigating the model, it may be necessary to return to the 2D view from which they were dropped from. Using “Back to Last View” immediately returns the Team member back to the source view.
To reinforce the BIM methodologies of “One Source of Truth,” Design Collaboration has been enhanced with “Content Awareness.” This functionality allows Design Collaboration to make associations within the sets of 2D views and 3D models. After using the “Place Me” feature to enter the model, a Team member can select an element and the Content Browser will display all associated views that display the selected element.
Once the associated view is opened, the selected element can be reviewed in 2D. You can manually zoom to the highlighted element or, use the Zoom to Fit tool.
As a new feature, Hypermodel Navigation will make exploring sets quick and easy while providing Team members with clearer insight.
