The Next Generation of BIM 360, Part 6: Cross-Platform Collaboration

Posted on November 12, 2018 by Synergis Applications Consultant, Bill Knittle

In Part 5, Applications Consultant Bill Knittle demonstrated how to use the newly updated homepage in Revit 2019.1 and explained how it differs from the Recent Files window. During this next part of our series, we’ll be discussing how BIM 360 Desktop Connect can provide workflows for cross-platform collaboration.

BIM 360 Desktop Connector provides a direct connection to your BIM 360 Projects. It achieves this by creating Drives to the Project Files folder in Next Gen BIM 360. The Dialog windows within Autodesk Desktop Applications can access Desktop Connector. With each new publish of the file, a version number is assigned to ensure it is current.

To access the BIM 360 Desktop Connector, you will first need to download the product and install it on your workstation.

Now that you’re all set up, let’s look at a use case workflow. In this workflow, the architect is using Revit and the consultant is using AutoCAD. Both have installed Desktop Connector and are actively signed in to their BIM 360 Project. Watch the video to see how Revit and AutoCAD users can exchange DWG files and externally reference to them via Desktop Connector.
